SCAO approved 40-hour General Civil Mediation
Training for 2008.
Synopsis
The Wayne Mediation Center 40-Hour Mediation Training is approved
by the State Court Administrative Office (SCAO). It fulfills the training
requirement under MCR 2.411 for Court Roster Qualification. The course
teaches the art of conflict management through facilitative mediation.
We use a combination of interactive training techniques, lecture,
role-play, and video to teach our course. We begin by helping our
students understand the nature of conflict, their own conflict management
styles, what “facilitative mediation” is, and how “facilitative mediation”
fits into the spectrum of alternative dispute resolution. We then
walk them through the mediation process – experientially - from pre-mediation
considerations and communications to writing effective mediation agreements.
Because we want our students to be skillful mediators, we show:
* proven communication and negotiation techniques
* how conflict escalates and de-escalates
* the importance of culture, gender, ethnic, and racial awareness/
sensitivity
* skills to maintain neutrality and identify bias
* ethical considerations and their implications
* different outcomes for mediation
Finally, we give our students the opportunity to practice the skills
we teach and explore concepts we discuss in a safe environment.

MCR 2.411 Internships
If you have just spent the last 40 hours of your
life learning facilitative mediation in one of the many SCAO Approved
Mediation Trainings in Michigan, please take note. In order to become
a Court Roster Qualified Mediator in Michigan, you must complete certain
requirements. Michigan Court Rule 2.411F(2)(c) covers one of those
requirements. The rule states that you must observe two general civil
mediations conducted by a qualified mediator and conduct one general
civil mediation under the supervision of a qualified mediator.
Unfortunately, not all observation opportunities are equal. Do what
other 40-hour Mediation Training Graduates have done by completing
your requirements with Wayne Mediation Center. For only $225, we’ll
make sure you have the opportunity to practice true facilitative mediation
under the supervision of our Court Roster mediators.
